Industrial Puncture Protection from a Variety of Hazards

HexArmor® gloves, arm, and body protection, made with SuperFabric® brand materials, are engineered to deflect and block industrial puncture hazards by limiting the space between the guard plates. Our puncture-resistance is unique because it stops a variety of industrial puncture hazards, while other technologies only perform well in test environments.

Due to inherent construction, conventional materials such as cotton, leather, aramids, and nylon are unable to stop sharp objects from penetrating through the material. You may see products with a high CE puncture rating, which tests with a blunt force probe. We do not recommend using this method for industrial puncture-resistance, as industrial punctures usually have cutting edges and tips, not blunt tips.

Reducing Injuries for the Largest Engineered Wood and Plywood Producers

With such an extensive range of applications, the high level of competition for finished lumber pushes manufacturers to produce goods as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. This has a direct impact on the thousands of employees working in lumber and plywood mills across the world. Lumber manufacturing can be extremely hazardous work, and companies cannot afford to lose valuable production time because of injury. The work environment in lumber mills makes it critical that safety teams constantly evaluate application-based hazards, and investigate PPE that reduces the likelihood of injury on the job.

Stopping Splinter Injuries

While wood remains a trusted construction material, it can be very dangerous to manufacture and process. In the dry lumber and veneer processing industry, wood splinters can have a devastating effect on worker safety and productivity. Splinters often range in size and can be extremely sharp and jagged, which poses a serious threat to the safety of employees. Safety professionals have a critical decision to make when choosing PPE for these production workers.  Many existing products, such as leather, Kevlar®, and Dyneema®, do not have the ability to protect from harsher splinter punctures.

Lumber Processing Giant Looks to HexArmor® to Mitigate Splinter Puncture Injuries

A large-scale lumber processing corporation reached out to HexArmor® in August of 2004 in search of PPE capable of reducing or eliminating recordable splinter injuries on laminate and veneer lines. One such plant was experiencing 18 first-aid and recordable splinter injuries per month, and had yet been unable to find a solution to this ongoing problem. The existing PPE was failing, and the involved safety professionals were having trouble finding alternative PPE technologies to try.  Fortunately, they turned to HexArmor®. Our Solution Specialists worked directly with the plant safety team to explore the possible application of existing HexArmor® technologies in new products, designed specifically for their production facilities. HexArmor® designers took the feedback from the dry lumber and veneer production lines and designed new PPE based on the specific needs, demands, and personal preferences of plant workers.

The reason behind the HexArmor® success in the lumber and wood processing industry is the unique puncture and cut protection from our proprietary technology, SuperFabric® brand material. SuperFabric® brand material exceeds industry standard cut levels (ANSI and CE level 5), and provides puncture protection from wood splinters, metal burrs, and wire pokes. With the introduction of HexArmor® gloves and arm guards to the processing facility, recordable and first aid injuries in that laminate and veneer plant dropped from 18 incidences per month to 0 incidences per month! The collaborative work between the plant’s safety team, in cooperation with HexArmor® Solution Specialists, resulted in a purpose-built PPE technology designed to specifically address their particular safety needs.  Most impressively, the lumber processing company eliminated any incident of wood splinter injuries for the next four years.
