To help you prepare for the winter season, we’ve put together some important information for you on how to choose proper cold weather hand protection.

When it comes to cold weather PPE, you’ll see many manufacturers offering temperature ratings or guarantees on insulated winter safety gear.

While putting a temperature rating on a product may seem reasonable, you simply can’t trust a universal temperature rating. There are too many factors that affect an individual’s ability to combat cold weather. These can include metabolism, height & weight, body type, movement while on the job, amount of sleep, and even your diet. For example, diets with high sodium and even alcohol can slow blood circulation through the body making it harder to stay warm in cold environments.

To measure thermal properties, the C-L-O, or CLO rating system has been the standard for decades. The CLO scale is used to measure the warmth levels of various materials, including thermal protection like Thinsulate. HexArmor has worked closely with 3M, the manufacturers of Thinsulate™, to develop our Cold Weather Collection.

The measurement of a CLO is determined based on the insulating value needed to keep a person at a comfortable level while standing in a 70-degree room with 50% humidity. For example, a winter parka and coveralls are equal to 1 CLO.

C40 Thinsulate™ has a CLO rating of .7 and is one of the most common thermal liners found in cold weather PPE. We’ve found C40 Thinsulate™ offers excellent protection for the majority of the United States, except in the most extreme conditions while not becoming too bulky and still allowing for workers to complete any task at hand.

For below average cold climates, C100 Thinsulate™ offers more protection for harsher conditions. C100 has a CLO rating of 1.3 and is slightly thicker than C40.

For extreme cold weather climates, or hands that are at rest more often, consider G150 Thinsulate™. G150 Thinsulate™ has a CLO rating of 2.8 and is quite a bit bulkier than the C40 or C100

Another crucial factor to staying warm, is staying dry. Dry hands maintain their heat up to 25x better. To effectively combat cold and freezing temperatures, ensure your hand protection includes a waterproof liner.

Like all PPE, there is no one-size fits all solution for your cold weather protection. So, remember if you hear a temperature claim given on a glove, you can’t trust that it will perform to the level advertised. Be sure to properly trial all your cold weather products prior to implementation.
