4x longer wear and 90% reduction in volume with the VS250 | Construction

When a construction crew for a data center was burning through multiple pairs of eyewear a week, the safety manager knew something had to change. By switching to HexArmor® VS250 safety glasses, the team was able to move from two short-life pairs of eyewear to one longer-lasting transitional lens solution. The result was lower weekly eyewear cost, less PPE waste, and a more compliant solution workers could wear across changing environments.

The problem: Burning through multiple pairs of eyewear

When safety managers at a data center in Frederick, MD looked at their eyewear program, the numbers told a frustrating story.

On-site, workers were constantly moving between indoor and outdoor environments, meaning their eyewear needed to do two things: provide clear visibility for lower-light or indoor work, and reduce brightness and glare outside. Because of this, workers were issued two separate pairs of safety glasses: one with clear lenses and one with dark, shaded lenses.

There were durability problems with both options – the lenses were scratching almost immediately. Once vision was compromised, workers would take the glasses off entirely, creating compliance gaps just as fast as new pairs were issued.

Workers were replacing each pair at least once a week, at $4–$5 per pair. With 150 workers each carrying two pairs, that was 300 pairs in rotation – replacing them weekly at $4–$5 per pair added up to roughly $1,200/week, or $62,000/year – just to keep the program running.

A separate compliance issue showed as well: workers moving between environments would often skip swapping glasses altogether, leaving protection gaps that were hard to track and enforce.

Overall, the program was becoming expensive, unsustainable, and difficult to manage.

The solution: One pair that adapts to changing light conditions

HexArmor® first connected with the project team for the data center construction at a safety tradeshow. After a positive experience working with HexArmor® on a previous opportunity, the team reached back out after the tradeshow when the data center site needed a better way to manage eyewear cost, waste, and compliance.

Because the relationship was already established, the conversation quickly moved from identifying the issue to finding a solution that aligned with the site’s needs. They needed a product that could take a beating in the tough jobsite conditions while helping workers easily stay on top of compliance as they moved between indoors and outdoors.

HexArmor® recommended the VS250 Variomatic safety glasses, designed with built-in transition lens technology that adapts to changing light conditions in 10 seconds or less. Instead of carrying one clear pair and one shaded pair of safety glasses, workers could use a single pair throughout the day.

The VS250 also features HexArmor’s permanent TruShield® lens coating, helping deliver long-lasting anti-fog and scratch-resistant performance – something their old safety glasses lacked.

The results: Lower cost, less waste, and better compliance

The switch to the VS250 Variomatic glasses delivered results that were hard to argue with. Because workers were previously switching their eyewear out weekly, the switch delivered:

  • 4x longer wear life compared to the clear and shaded lenses workers were replacing weekly
  • Reduced eyewear replacements by nearly 90%, from approximately 15,600 pairs annually to 1,800 pairs
  • Annualized eyewear spend reduced from approximately $62,400 to $52,200, saving more than $10,000 per year across 150 workers
  • Weekly cost dropped from approximately $8 to $6.70 per worker, despite the higher upfront cost of the VS250 Variomatic
  • Helped reduce compliance gaps across the crew, with one pair of eyewear that adapted between indoor and outdoor work environments

What started as a cost and compliance problem turned out to have a straightforward fix: one pair of eyewear that helped the crew reduce waste, lower spend, and stay protected without thinking twice about which glasses they needed for the task.
