Workers in the pulp and paper industries are exposed to dangerous hazards, particularly during outages when mill workers and contractors inspect and maintain equipment. At times, incidents happen – and this was the case for one of the workers. See how the Helix® 3062IMP saved a worker’s finger while conducting an inspection during a routine outage.
The issue
A paper mill was at the beginning of a routine month-long outage when an incident occurred in the steam and power section of the mill.
During a water wash inspection, a worker was closing a large, bulky steel door after finishing an inspection of a boiler. Because the door was extremely heavy, the worker placed both hands on the door and used his whole body to push the door closed.
However, this added force resulted in the worker’s hand slipping into the door’s frame where his pinkie finger got caught in the sharp right angle.
The solution
Luckily, the crew had recently moved to wearing the Helix® 3062IMP as the primary glove for the mill. The glove’s innovative sewn-on IR-X® Impact Exoskeleton™ with level 2 impact resistance and 360-degree level 9 cut protection saved the finger from what could have been a damaging recordable accident.

The result

Prior to the 3062IMP, the team was wearing a level 1 impact-resistant glove with palm cut only, so the incident could have been much worse had it not been for the increased protection of the Helix® 3062IMP.
“I’m shocked his finger didn’t require stitches or potentially an amputation. His finger was totally saved,” says Greg.
