The opioid crisis is not breaking news. By 2015, the rise in opioid and heroin abuse had driven opioid-related overdoses to more than 33,000 (almost two-thirds of drug overdoses that year).1 In 2016, opioid overdoses rose to more than 42,000 deaths, making the opioid epidemic deadlier than the AIDS epidemic at its peak.2

The percentage of abusers choosing to inject their opioid of choice hovers around 25%. “Death rates now rival those of AIDS during the 1990s, and with overdoses from heroin and other opioids now killing more than 27,000 people a year, the crisis has led to urgent calls for action.”3 The crisis is real, and it is affecting more than its abusers.

First responders, police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and correctional officers have been on the front lines of this epidemic. The dangers of needlesticks are clear – just one stick and the fear of contracting Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or HIV is stunningly real. Abusers are more likely to carry these bloodborne diseases, and our law enforcement faces the threat of contracting every time they perform a body or property search.

Needlestick awareness and prevention is becoming paramount for those in law enforcement and public service.  The push for needlestick protection is rising, as are proper needlestick safety protocols. This is where HexArmor® leads the industry.

When needlestick protection is critical to the job, HexArmor® brings practical application experience and unrivaled technology to hand safety.
